What educators are saying

We watched Fern Gully as a supplement to our informational text about environmental conservation, and these activities were the perfect addition to keep students on task and actively learning even while viewing the film.
Okay, as a 90's baby I was so excited to show my kids this movie. I really liked using the multiple choice for how the end of the year was going, but next time I will definitely be using the empty questions. This was so useful for our last science units for ecosystems.

Description

This 11 page movie guide with additional activities accompanies the animated film "FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992)".

★★ Check out the full preview! ★★

This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made two sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

  • 30 questions requiring full sentence answers.
  • 30 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers.

PART 2 – Storyboard and synopsis

  • Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to help with the sequences.
  • Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

PART 3 – Environmental writing and poster creation (could work well in pairs)

  • Here the students have to answer 3 questions about environmental damage. The 1st question asks the students to list and detail three forms of man-made pollution and why they are a problem. The 2nd question is about deforestation and the last one is why they think it’s important to protect the environment.
  • Students to imagine they are helping Zak make an awareness poster to help protect FernGully. They first design a poster layout with included elements listed, then go on to create the poster on either Letter/A4/A3 paper.

The movie is about the magical inhabitants of a rainforest called FernGully. Following the defeat of a polluting force of destruction called Hexxus, the fairies have been able to live peacefully in the forest. When something unusual captures the interest of a young fairy named Crysta, her curiosity brings her into contact with a human named Zak and a hidden secret.

How can movies help students learn English?

Movies can be used as a follow on from a novel study

- There are a huge number of movies that have been adapted from books which allow for book to movie comparisons or simply as a reward for finishing the book.

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

Movies gives a visual context

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context. To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

Variety and flexibility

- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarizing.
