famous paintings - Lesson description

You don’t need to be an Art enthusiast to discuss art. Paintings teach us about things like culture, history, politics, relationships, and language.

Discussing a famous painting with ESL students is an opportunity to teach so many different topics in one go - proverbs, history, the cultural origin of things, names of materials and objects, and even “cultural jokes”, all that while enjoying some of the most beautiful masterpieces in art history.

In this series of lessons, I’ve chosen paintings that are wrapped in mysterious theories and paintings that provoke debate and controversy.

Every lesson includes:

-A short history of the artist.

- Information and history of the painting

-How to conduct the conversation by topics (the subject, the composition, the location, the background, the colors, etc.)

-Guiding questions (and answers) for the students.

-Standard and surprising theories about the painting through the course of history.

-Vocabulary

The Arnolfini Portrait

The Arnolfini Portrait is a completely unique painting, there is nothing else like it that has survived in 15th-century art.

Throughout the centuries, this painting triggered many detective-like attempts because there are so many symbolic objects in it. It has been dissected and analyzed by countless art critics, and in the process, managed to become even more mysterious.

This is a three-hour mini unit that includes two PowerPoints accompanied by student worksheets and teacher’s notes.

*I created this lesson for adult ESL conversation classes of intermediate and advanced levels, but it is also a great lesson for high school students studying art history.

Part one –

In this part, we look at the painter Van Eyck, his history, and his reputation. We try to decipher the codes in the painting to get a picture of the reality of the 15th century in which the Arnolfini’s lived. We look for clues (in the couple’s house, the furniture, the design, and the clothes) to understand the politics, social hierarchy, and local customs of their time.

Part two –

In this part, we dive into the relationship between the two. We study four theories by art historians that provide different interpretations of the clues and the meaning behind this painting. Students are asked to choose the theory that sounds the most convincing and explain why. Finally, we analyze a poem that provides yet another wonderful theory and shows that we can all have a valid and intelligent opinion about art, even if are not art experts!

THIS LESSON INCLUDES:

IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON BUYING THIS PRODUCT, PLEASE READ THIS:

The products in this shop are all created by me, a dyslexic teacher (hence the name).

I’m painfully aware of what seems to be a very poor judgment of career choice on my part, and to be honest, a large part of this choice was to stick it to Mrs. Jacobson who said that there’s no place for the likes of me with my “pretend excuses” for misspelling every third word, in any self-respecting educational institution (so you see how I naturally, had to become a teacher.)

I’ve been teaching ESL adult classes and cross-culture business classes, For over 25 years, and much like other challenged individuals who go through life with one hand tied behind their backs, I try to make up for what I lack in the spelling department with hours of research, high-quality graphics, humor, passion, and love for what I do.

The fact that I can actually do this job is first and foremost a testament to the open-mindedness (or desperation brought on by the long economic recession) of the schools that hired me over the years despite this very evident drawback, to the parents that tolerated grammar mishaps, and most of all to my beautiful students who have learned to “always double-check their teacher” and have come up with the sweetest, most heart-warming and diplomatic ways of pointing out my spelling errors (putting to great use their newly-acquired conditional capacity: “I’m not sure, but, I think I might have spotted…”)

Over the years, I've singlehandedly contributed to the economic success of countless computer ‘correcting programs’ available on the market (you're welcome Grammarly) and, on top of that, my lessons are proofread by a few dedicated, wonderful, kind (and very frustrated) TPT teachers, BUT there are always some errors that slip by us (mostly because I keep messing with the lessons after they've been proofread).

• If you feel offended by the existence of spelling errors in what is supposed to be a teaching tool

• or if you, much like Mrs. Jacobson, think the dyslexia is just an excuse not to try harder

THEN THIS PRODUCT IS NOT FOR YOU!

For all you tree-hugging, open-minded individuals, who are looking for challenging, original material for your conversation classes and can see beyond the possible grammar errors (maybe even use it as a teaching opportunity “An extra point for the first student who can spot the obvious grammar error that I always tell you never to make”.) Plus… you know that lovely, warm, superior feeling you get when you catch a colleague’s error - well these moments are included with the product – no extra charge

THEN THIS PRODUCT IS DEFINITELY FOR YOU!

All my lessons are in an editable PPT format, and you get a free product if you point out the errors for me to correct.

I hope this product delivers everything you hoped for and more.

Thank you!

WISHING YOU ALL A WONDERFUL AND SUCCESSFUL YEAR!
