What educators are saying

I used this activity while reading "Fall of the House of Usher" with my class. All of these worksheets follow the reading selections very closely. Thank you!
Great resource and time saver! This was enough to keep the students on track but not so much that they got lost.

Description

This lesson contains a complete guided reading worksheet with 47 questions (with answer key), crossword puzzle (with answer key) and wordsearch puzzle (with answer key) for The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. All puzzles use key vocabulary words from the story.

Check out the free preview I am offering. It contains the first 10 questions (with answer key) of the 47 question worksheet. You can also see the puzzles clearly in the thumbnails to your left.

If you don't have the full version of the story, you can find it here:
http://poestories.com/read/houseofusher

This worksheet is designed with cost effective photocopying in mind. The question worksheet is a two page worksheet that can be combined to a front/back copy using only 1 sheet of paper. No staples needed. The same can be done with the crossword and wordsearch puzzles to save on paper.

You may already know this, but this is not an easy story for most lower level students to read. This worksheet/activity is really necessary for these students as it helps them read along with the story and answer the questions.

The 47 question worksheet will take about 65 to 90 minutes long to complete (depending on the student). The crossword puzzle and wordsearch takes about 20-30 minutes each to complete.

As a public high school English teacher, the biggest challenge I have is getting students to read in class or at home. Put a book or short story in front of them, they'll look at it for a few seconds and start day dreaming...

Until I stumbled upon something magnificent. Teenagers like accomplishment. These worksheets ask questions while the reader reads. Every couple of sentences, there's another question in true or false, fill in the blank, define, multiple choice formats. As the student reads, boom, another question. They answer it and continue reading. Before you know it, they have finished reading the story and completed all questions for further lessons/discussions.

These worksheets are great for daily lessons, test/quiz grades, extra credit, homework, group work (in pairs of two), substitute teacher lessons, emergency lesson plans, great for ESOL or however you can imagine.
