Description

Project Explanation: This assignment is a quarter-long project that incorporates reading, writing, civics, critical thinking, and real world experience. Students take three beloved fairy tales and put the characters to the test. The Wolf character is put on trial to see if he is innocent or guilty in each fairy tale. Students practice and learn opinion writing in a real-life legal setting. Using fiction and non-fiction text, close reading and annotating skills students set up their own essays, questions to ask, and opinions to explain. Students get an actual understanding of the Judicial Branch and see it in action. They learn why we have the Judicial Branch, and why it is so important. Finally they can learn about some of the rights that correlate with the courts. A script for each trial has been created so students get the full experience of an actual mock trial. Students are able to experience different roles within each trial by having a separate trial for each fairy tale. There is a final debrief and reflection on each of the elements of the project: reading, writing, and civics.

Stories: Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, Peter and the Wolf: All stories are written in two different viewpoints and are leveled at different reading levels.
