What educators are saying

My students LOVED this activity. I appreciate that there are many different ways to read the story before completing the activity. Thank you!
We did this activity during our Right to Read Week. The students loved the connection to the story Hansel and Gretel and to what we were learning in math. Very fun!

Description

*Best seller!* Can YOUR students help Hansel and Gretel outsmart the witch? They will need to use their math skills in this fairy tale with a STEM twist!

The Story

Your students will help Hansel and Gretel cleverly outwit the witch to set themselves free and trap her instead! Students will need to use basic measurement skills for this project (either estimating dimensions or measuring linear dimensions). You will need STEM building materials such as cardboard, tape, straws, or pipe cleaners. You may instead choose to use candy items to build with, but I find those tend to disappear quickly into hungry mouths. ;-)

What You'll Get

  • Instructions and sample images
  • 8-page short story book to guide your students through the engineering design process (*also provided in front/back and digital options)
  • Printable characters
  • Measurement data recording sheet
  • 3 bonus STEM challenges
  • Coloring page
  • Rubric
  • Certificate of completion
  • Graphic organizers for students to retell, sequence, and contrast and compare fairy tales

What are STEM Tales?

STEM tales are a series of STEM challenges that are accessible for your youngest budding engineers; they use a fairy tale that your students are likely already familiar with. By adding in a story element, those students that might typically shy away from STEM activities may enjoy transporting themselves into a story to solve a problem.

What is the best way to use these fairy tale activities?

If you only have 30-45 minutes, this is how I suggest you use these activities:

Read an original version of the fairy tale (any variation will do!) Then read the story provided in this resource (together so students can follow along), and allow students to see what materials are available on the first day. They can then sketch their idea based on the problem in the story and the materials you have available.

On the second day, students can build, test, and make modifications as needed. That way they are only constructing on one day and you don't need to worry about preserving prototypes class to class.

What Teachers Are Saying

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Absolutely loved this resource for my 1st-2nd grade GT students. It includes math, engineering, and critical thinking!! Went well with our fairy tale unit!"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Wow! I did this with my 1st graders and they really rose to the challenge! High engagement, lots of critical thinking skills. Never too young to start STEM!"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Was blown away by the designs that my students came up with! I loved the explicit criteria and loved that students had to continue to modify when I could easily make the witch escape as well!"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Another winner [my first was Rapunzel]. Can't say enough good things about these units. The kids love giving feedback, you have done STEM well and it's at Grade 2 level. Keep making more please!!!"

Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit.
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.
NGSSK-2-ETS1-2
Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
