Description
This is a bundle for Ray Bradbury's novel "Fahrenheit 451," and it's designed to get you through a complete unit on the novel. It has five items: a test, reading quizzes, essay prompts, study guides, and answer keys.
Test
The test has 80 multiple-choice and true-false questions. The questions are mixed up between text-based questions and beyond-the-text analytical questions that require higher order thinking skills.
This test is divided into four parts (20 questions apiece): General Knowledge Questions, “The Hearth and the Salamander, “The Sieve and the Sand,” and “Burning Bright.”
The section on general knowledge contains 20 questions straight from the text, also known as questions within the text. They are factual answers to questions about elements in the novel. These are all multiple-choice questions.
The next three sections have 60 questions total -- 20 per section divided evenly among the three parts of the novel. These sections contain beyond-text and about-the-text questions that require higher order thinking skills, or HOTS.
There are 35 beyond-text questions that deal with making connections, inferring, and synthesizing. There are 25 about-the-text questions that deal with analyzing the writer’s craft and critically thinking about the ideas in the text.
In the final three sections, there are 54 multiple-choice questions and six true-false questions.
There are two tests with different question-answer formats. I give an example of this in the preview for question No. 76.
Test #1 has 20 questions that contain the "NOT" format. In this type of question-answer format, the student must identify three true statements from the possible answers and choose the answer that is NOT true.
Test #2 has those same 20 questions written in a traditional format. In the possible answers, students are only looking for the true statements.
Both tests are written in 2-column format. Test #1 is 13 pages. Test #2 is 14 pages.
BOTH tests contain the same questions.
Grade Level
This test is designed to challenge high school students in 11th or 12th grades. For 9th and 10th grades, I would edit the test, reducing the number of questions and/or possibly reducing the number of possible answers to choose from. (The test does come in Word.) However, for a 10th-grade honors or advanced class, I would leave the test as is.
Answer Key
The answer key is written in single column, taking up 20 pages.
The correct answer is in bold for each question, which will make it easy for you to see the questions, all answers to choose from, as well as the correct answers.
Study Guide
There are two study guides for you to choose from that help students prepare for the test, letting students know exactly what they need to know.
Study Guide A, which is 7 pages, allows students to see the specific quotes from the text for which they need to identify figurative language.
Study Guide B, which is 6 pages, does not allow the students to see the specific quotes ahead of time.
You can choose which study guide will work best for your class.
Test Length
The test should take the average student about 45 to 50 minutes to complete, while students who excel may complete it in 35 to 40 minutes.
Word and PDF
All documents come in Word (editable) and in PDF; therefore, there are 92 total pages.
Since all documents come in Word, you may edit them in any manner you choose.
Reading Quizzes
This product has 6 quizzes for Ray Bradbury’s novel “Fahrenheit 451.”
Quiz Questions
Each quiz has 10 multiple-choice questions that are spaced evenly apart from throughout the novel. This requires students to read the entire text. The questions are in-text questions.
The quizzes are designed in 2-column format so they each fit nicely onto a single page. Since there are 6 quizzes, as well as 6 answer keys, which are in Word and in PDF, there are 24 total pages.
These quizzes are assessments to simply check that students have completed their reading and to check the students' understanding of what is happening in the story.
Word and PDF
Since the quizzes do come in Word, you are able to edit the quizzes if need be. But if you like them as PDFs, you may use those versions.
Essay Prompts
This item has an essay test that contains 11 prompts to write an essay for Ray Bradbury's novel "Fahrenheit 451."
7 Prompts, Teacher Picks 1
In the first set of prompts, students should prepare for all 7 prompts. On the day of the test, the teacher chooses 1 prompt students answer. The test is a 3- to 5-paragraph essay.
If you teach more than one section of the class, you can randomly choose prompts for each section. Therefore, students who take the class near the end of the day don't know for sure which prompt will be used even though they may have asked students who wrote the essay earlier in the day which prompt they answered.
There are two types of answer documents for these prompts. Each answer document is 4 pages.
The first answer document includes 4 Focused Writing Areas. These 4 FWAs give the student a guide as to how the teacher will score the essay. However, if the teacher has her or his own personal scoring system, there is a second answer document that does not contain the FWAs.
4 HOTS Prompts, Teachers May Choose 1 or Allow Students to Choose
The second set of prompts are for an essay that requires higher-order thinking skills. The essays should be 4 to 7 paragraphs. These prompts would best be used for honors or advanced classes. They could also be used to help prepare students for standardized-testing essays.
For these prompts, it is suggested the students are not given the prompts in advance. The day of the test, the students are given the prompts. The teacher may either choose a prompt for the class to write, or the teacher may allow students to choose the prompt they want to answer.
The first set of HOTS prompts includes a Holistic Scoring Guide. This guide shows students how the teacher will score the essays.
The second set of HOTS prompts do not include a scoring guide. These are for teachers who have their own personal scoring system.
There are two types of answer documents for HOTS prompts. One is for using the Holistic Scoring Guide and one is for not using it. Each answer document is 5 pages.
* The CCSS listed for the prompts are designed for the regular 7 essay prompts. If you are using these 4 HOTS prompts, the standards are as follows:
CCRA.W. 1, 4, & 9
W.11-12. 1, 1a, & 1b
W.11-12. 2 & 2b
W.11-12. 4
W.11-12. 9 & 9a
