Description

This digital (Google Slides) and print resource is a rigorous activity for your mathematicians! Students will use their knowledge of various types of numbers to solve a puzzle. Included, you will find the puzzle, a reflection sheet and two graphic organizer aides.

Students will examine a set of twenty-five numbers along with ten headings. The headings will be placed along two sides of a 5 x 5 grid. Once students have placed the headings, the twenty-five numbers will be placed in the 5 x 5 grid. Once the puzzle is complete, all of the squares on the 5 x 5 grid will have one number that satisfies the heading card for the row and column.

The headings include:

  • Prime Numbers
  • Square Numbers
  • Numbers Less Than 20
  • Numbers More Than 20
  • Odd Numbers
  • Triangular Numbers
  • Factors of 60
  • Multiples of 3
  • Multiples of 5
  • Even Numbers

This challenging activity generates discussion about the various types of numbers. Students will need to decipher which numbers can fit in the various headings. There is more than one correct answer.

Two additional graphic organizers can be provided to the students so that they can visually see which numbers belong to each category or heading. The last part of the graphic organizer asks students to determine how many numbers fit in 3, 4, 5 or 6 categories. This can be helpful when placing the numbers on the 5 x 5 grid.

Once the student has completed the puzzle, he/she will complete five reflection questions.

An answer key is included on the printable resource.
