Description

This 10 slide Math Activ Studio flipchart for Promethean Board teaches students how to write and solve related addition and subtraction facts (inverse operations). This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 6.4 - 1st grade. The lesson opens with the "Problem of the Day" in which students are given a subtraction problem in which they can color in the socks and eliminate (cross-out method) to find the answer. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary terms needed to understand the content of the lesson: subtraction, addition, and related, with examples. The students are then shown a page introducing related facts with a problem showing the parts and whole of the problem. Next, the students are invited to demonstrate fact families: one student can move the virtual chips and manipulate to demonstrate parts and a whole, then a partner can write in the addition problem, then another group of students can do the same thing but demonstrating with the subtraction version of the problem (this goes on for several pages, using different problems). The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The next page allows one last class problem for review and closure using higher order thinking. The last page gives students a fun a math journal entry involving related facts.
