Description

Are your students wearing face masks this year?

This may be a very new experience for them. Just like adults, kids may not be used to wearing face masks. They may think they are uncomfortable. They may have questions about why they are wearing one now. They may wonder about the facial expressions that adults and children are hiding behind their masks. This is a great time to discuss how and why we wear a mask, mask safety, and addressing the social emotional needs of our students as they attend school with new procedures (such ask face masks, social distancing, temperature checks, increased hand washing, etc.).

This "Design Your Own Face Mask" art project is intended to help masks seem less scary for children as they attend school wearing a mask for possibly the first time. In this project, students are given the opportunity to design their own mask. Masks could be attached to paper plates to create a whole face, or simply designed and displayed in the hall.

If making the whole face, I’ve included some options for eyes, a nose and two mouths. I think it would be fun to glue the mouth on first and then attach the mask with a bit of glue or tape in a way that covers the bottom of the nose and the mouth to reinforce that both the nose and mouth should always be covered when we wear our masks, but also that we are still smiling under our masks!

Continue the learning with children's literature depicting characters wearing masks. I have included a list of 6 children's books to check out.
