I created this product years ago, when I noticed that my students needed more practice decoding words... but, they were getting frustrated because there were so many words in their books with sons composés, lettres muettes, etc.
They would feel discouraged because, while they were doing a great job saying all of the sounds of the letters they saw, they were still technically incorrect!
Sometimes, I find my students take words and learning to read a little too seriously - they need to relax and have fun with reading, and understand that the more we can play with sounds, the easier reading will become!
So, I had the idea to get my students to practice decoding / blending with nonsense words - les mots « sans sens ».
The words in this resource that your students will decode aren't "real" words, but they are words where each letter makes its sound!
Your students will have so much fun (without the extra pressure of needing to be "right" and coming up with a word that makes sense) discovering letter sounds and how to blend them together with this resource.
This resource includes:
- 30 pages of nonsense words cards, for creating individual nonsense word booklets for your students to practice at home (4 per page)
- 1 cover page for the above booklets (print as many as you need!)
- 21 pages of nonsense word flash cards, which you can also use for one of the board games (4 per page)
- 6 game board pages (devine le mot - un jeu en partenaire, la lecture de vitesse des mots sans sens et 2 jeux de société)
I have avoided les sons composés, letters that can make more than one sound (c, g) and les lettres muettes.
When your students become more comfortable with decoding nonsense words, they will surely be more comfortable trying to decode new words in their books!
