Description

Do your primary students struggle with seeing French "sons composés" as a whole, and instead try to decode each letter as they read? Do they need practice identifying and reading a variety of sons composés?

If yes, then this resource is sure to help! Let's stop encouraging our students to memorize and guess, and instead teach them to REALLY read new words.

The concept of this activity is simple, but I have seen it really make a difference with my students.

SAVE OVER 20% BY GETTING THIS RESOURCE AS PART OF A BUNDLE!

This resource contains sound strips for 22 different French « sons composés ».

Each strip targets its own “son composé”. Students will find the sound within each word, and then use the sound to help them read the words.

There are two versions of each strip. In the first version, the target sound is coloured, and « les lettres muettes » are grey. Regular letters that "talk" are black. This format will help your students who are just getting used to French sounds remember to reach each son composé as one sound, and to not pronounce the silent letters.

In the second version, ALL of the letters are black. These strips contain all of the same words and order of words as the coloured strips, but they are trickier as students will have to recognize the sons composés and the silent letters on their own.

You can choose which version is best for your students, depending on their needs and abilities!

I use these sound strips during guided reading, and will often send some strips home in my students' reading bags for extra practice when I teach a new sound. I love being able to differentiate depending on my students’ individual needs!

Each of the words for practicing the simplest sounds that you teach first contain ONLY that son composé - no others!

This means that you can teach the sounds to your students in any order that you like, and they will still be able to decode every word on the page (no prior son composés knowledge required).

*There are a couple of words for some of the more complex sounds (ph, oin, ain, eille, ien, eau, gn) that contain more than one sound, but very few! On the coloured cards, I underline those sounds, to remind students to think of those letters as one sound.

Included sounds:

  • on
  • ou
  • oi
  • ch
  • in
  • ai
  • eu
  • ei
  • ui
  • an
  • en
  • et
  • qu
  • gn
  • eau
  • ien
  • ain
  • eil
  • eille
  • oeu
  • oin
  • ph

Check out the preview above for a closer look at the included sound strips.

Each strip also includes a picture clue of an anchor word for each of the target sounds.

Easy prep - just print, laminate, and cut!
