Description

FOOD SECURITY UNIT FOR STUDENTS GRADES 8-10

This unit aims to give students an overview of food security, including threats to food security, factors influencing food security and new food frontiers that are being embarked upon in the quest to develop more sustainable food systems. It has been designed in line with the Australian Geography Curriculum for Year 9, but would be easily applicable to a range of curricula.

This unit is 100% editable, meaning you can customise the resource to suit your teaching style and student needs!

Please note that internet access is required for students to complete this unit.

The unit is framed by a 32-slide powerpoint: 25 slides contain notes to take down, 6 slides that direct students to activities. The presentation is accompanied by a 14-page note taking document that includes comprehension questions based on information presented in the slides as well as 'apply your knowledge' style questions.

The unit contains 3 major activities and 3 worksheets (in addition to the note taking document).

MAJOR ACTIVITIES:
-Dumpster diving: students are required to research dumpster diving as an alternative method of procuring food. They produce an action plan and risk assessment for a hypothetical dumpster diving mission.
-Plant-based meat campaign: students research plant-based meat and develop a social media campaign aimed at promoting the consumption of plant-based meat to the youth demographic. A rubric has been made to accompany this task.
-Food security assignment: Students research a contemporary geographical issue and how this issue poses a threat to food security. A rubric has been made to accompany this task.

WORKSHEETS
-Plant-based meat: students watch a PBS clip online and answer a series of comprehension questions about the advantages and disadvantages of plant-based meat.
-Insects: students watch a Ted Talk online and answer a series of comprehension questions and reflection questions about consuming insects as an alternative source of protein.
-Aquaponics: information about aquaponics as an alternative method of food production is presented. Students are then required to complete further research in order to answer three questions about the use of aquaponics.

Included resources/documents:
32-slide PowerPoint
3 x worksheets
3 x major activities/assessments
1 x note taking document to accompany powerpoint
1 x teaching notes

Time allowance
The unit is designed to take approximately 18-28 lessons of class time (3.5-5.5 weeks), with the assumption that a lesson is 50 minutes long. This will vary depending on the age of your students and the depth in which you have students complete the major activities.
