Many fine novels have been written in recent years about residential schools and the harm inflicted upon generations of aboriginal people in Canada and the United States. Michelle Good’s, Five Little Indians, is one of the best. She is well-qualified (Cree lawyer and writer) to write such a story. And the novel has received many awards and much praise.

Five Little Indians is a great story -- a story full of substance and significance. And Michelle Good tells it as it was, and is, and can be -- a story of heartbreak, but most importantly -- hope.

Well over 100-hours of reading, research, and writing, plus decades of teaching, and a number of years working directly alongside Aboriginal persons combine to provide you with a solid and sensitive resource that will engage and challenge your students.

The 89-page Student Workbook covers the Prologue and all the Chapters (1-18) with questions and activities that develop critical thinking and creative communication skills. All strands are met: reading, writing, oral (speaking/listening), and media. The Workbook develops core knowledge and drives the dynamic learning. I have students come prepared with their Chapter answers (plus any other questions and insights/inspirations they may have), and then combine pair and small group sharing opportunities followed by class discussion led by assigned students. I do individual checkups, along with sit-ins on pair and small group sharing and add, as necessary, to the student led class discussions. Students are also encouraged to integrate their multiple intelligences in their written work and oral discussions. I model it and include examples to spark their creativity. It's a happening place and process where we encourage and build one another up. And together, we take one step closer to truth and reconciliation.

In addition to the assessment and evaluation opportunities in the Workbook, there is an 18-page Multiple Choice Test (100 Questions) with page noted Answer Key, as well as the 3-page Essay Topic Pack. To prep the students for the final testing turn to the innovative 'Talk on the Spot' Review.

Excellent for grades 10 - 12 English courses, as well as the Ontario Grade 11 English course in which all textbooks must be written by indigenous authors.

And the best part, while it is complete and ready-to-go, is the adaptability. I think of it as a runway that lets you, the teacher, take off and soar, knowing there is a safe landing available. :)
