Description

This lesson goes over the exterior angle theorem. Students are first introduced to new key terms (remote interior angle & exterior angle). Then, using the fact that the sum of the two remote interior angles equals the exterior angle in a triangle, students set up equations & solve for the missing angles. There are 8 problems that vary in level of difficulty. The first 4 questions students are given two of the angle measures, and only have to find the missing third angle measure. In the last 4 problems, they have to set up equations and find the value of x first.

Students and teachers love how easy these notes are to follow and understand!

These notes get straight to the point of the skill being taught, which I have found is imperative for the attention span of middle schoolers! They are also a great tool for students to refer back to.

Use informal arguments to establish facts about the angle sum and exterior angle of triangles, about the angles created when parallel lines are cut by a transversal, and the angle-angle criterion for similarity of triangles. For example, arrange three copies of the same triangle so that the sum of the three angles appears to form a line, and give an argument in terms of transversals why this is so.
