    Space Travel Print and Read

    Informational Text Features:

    • This set features upper 3rd to fifth-grade skills of finding the main idea, determining word meaning in context, finding evidence, comparing examples to passages, listing examples, and basic reading comprehension questions.
    • The set also makes use of non-fiction text features.
    • The set also makes use of non-fiction text features. You will find the use of bold print, bullets, captions, fact boxes, a glossary, illustrations, italics, a map, subtitles, titles, tables, and a timeline.

    The Reading Passages:

    • The 4 reading passages are provided in 2 reading levels- an easier and a more challenging one.
    • The reading selections include basic information about the Challenger, Sally Ride, walking in Space, and Bonnie Dunbar.
    • Each set of passages includes a basic worksheet in two levels.
    • A magazine mock-up article page includes 3 more reading selections and a map showing the locations of NASA facilities.
    • The articles include information about stars, light-years, falling stars, and NASA. There is a comprehension question page for the newspaper set and 2 graphic organizers.

    STEM Challenge Activity Space Robots

    What is the challenge?

    • Students will design a robot with a purpose.
    • The robot's function will be to perform tasks for astronauts in space.
    • Our scenario for this challenge was to design a robot that could perform a task on a planet or the moon's surface. The task must be one that astronauts would need help with (lifting heavy loads, providing extra oxygen, etc.)
    • Your students will love brainstorming ideas for their robots!

    What is your prep for the STM Challenge?

    Supplies needed in addition to this package include cardboard, index cards or cardstock, pipe cleaners, foil, straws, rubber bands, masking tape, and a container for each group’s supplies. Of course, substitutions can be made for any of these! Use what you have in your craft supplies! Suggestions are included in the resource.
