Excel 2010 Tutorial - Intro to Excel, data entry and formatting

This is definitely a beginner, novice level, newbie assignment! It should be your starting point in this bundle. Students learn basic data entry as well as how to use the AutoFormat feature to make tables look nice and colorful! This is literally the first exercise I give my students in an Excel unit. Being a Canadian, I am affirming the stereotype about us loving hockey by making this an NHL (fictional) standings data table :)! Obviously, students could choose NFL, NBA, MLB or other nonsports related information to include in their table.

Excel 2010 Tutorial - NBA stats Using the AVERAGE math function

In this engaging beginner level activity, we will use the world of sports to illustrate how to use the AVERAGE function in Excel. Specifically, students build a spreadsheet that calculates averages based on a fictional 10 game cross sample of NBA players scoring stats. Formatting skills are reviewed here as the exercise requires the creation of headings, the formatting of shapes, the use of borders, as well as different font sizes and colors.

This lesson can be used in other versions of Excel and is a classroom tested exercise. I usually give this assignment within the first couple of classes of an Excel unit, after having covered basic data entry and after the students are familiar with basic math functions such as SUM and AutoSum.

Excel 2010 Tutorial - Using Sparklines to graph data trends

This is a popular assignment as students get to visually represent data trends using Sparklines. We make up some car sales data for a fictional company and use the numbers to show sales highs and lows like a stock market graphic.

Tips:

- Take the time to do these exercises yourself prior to presenting to the students so you are familiar with the steps.

- It is helpful to present the teacher demo excel files that come with data already populated, and use these demo files to highlight the math/formatting key teaching points as you see fit.

- Pick the instructions which match your class the best. There are very hands on instructions as well as instructions that are designed for students to be more independent and investigative.
