Description

Students will practice evaluating expressions given a value for the variables. The cards range in level of complexity from simple two-term expressions with a single variable to expressions with three variables, fractional coefficients, and exponents. There are also word problems using real-world formulas for area, volume, temperature, and velocity.

This download is a 2-for-1 bundle! Evaluating expressions is a skill that spans grade levels, so you'll find two versions of the task cards here. One version uses only positive values for the variables and will result in all positive answers, since some students may learn this before becoming comfortable with negative numbers. The other version uses negative values and may result in negative answers. The expressions are the same, but the values are different, so you could use both of these sets with the same students.

In addition to the two problem sets, you'll find two versions of each set - one with QR codes and one without. QR codes allow students to use their devices - no Internet connection required! - to check their own answers.

A breakdown of the task cards is provided so you can tailor problem sets for your groups. You'll also find suggestions on preparation and a recording sheet that's ready to use. This is a low-prep activity that your students will enjoy! Use these task cards to replace a worksheet, to review for a test, or even as an independent practice in math centers.

Inside you'll find:
*Detailed instructions and standards correlation
*Set A - 28 Task Cards w/ all positive values for variables and positive results - both with and without QR codes
*Set B - 28 Task Cards w/ positive and negative values for variables and answers
*Answer keys
*File folder labels for storage
*Answer keys
*Recording sheet for student work

I hope your students love this activity! As always, please feel free to provide feedback on how your students liked it and what could be better. :)
