Description

This NO PREP digital and print resource can be used to assess your students understanding on Estimating Square Roots. The resource includes 24 tasks card, an answer document and two Google Forms. Use this resource with a Google Classroom, distance learning or homeschooling.

This engaging, cooperative learning task card resource has students discussing and estimating square roots. Students will locate rational and irrational numbers on a number line; order and compare rational and irrational numbers; and understand the value of a square root can be approximated between integers and that non-perfect square roots are irrational. Please take a look at the preview to see what is included.

The digital resource includes two Google Forms. One of the forms is open ended. Students have the opportunity to solve and explain their thinking. The other Google Form is formatted as a multiple-choice quiz.

This resource can be used in order to review 8.NS.2 concepts:

  • Students locate rational and irrational numbers on a number line
  • Students order and compare rational and irrational numbers
  • Students also recognize that square roots may be negative and written as - √12
  • Students also understand the value of square root can be approximated between integers and that non-perfect square roots are irrational

Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
