Essay Writing: ELL ELD ESL Bundle

If you have ELLs in your classroom, it can be a daunting process to find the best way to reach their needs when preparing for essay writing. You definitely want to start here with this bundle. The bundle includes:

• Analytical Essay Writing Informative Article and Graphic Organizer: Students will first read about essay writing in general (i.e. what are sentences and paragraphs) and analytical essay writing specifically (i.e. what are quotes). The article has been specially written to meet lower-level WIDA learners (i.e. written on a 4th grade reading level, which is most beneficial and supportive) and includes reading tools like underlined vocabulary and pictures to aid translation and comprehension. The second page of the article is a graphic organizer which requires students to define key vocabulary from the article
• ELL Flashcards for Analytical Essays: Fourteen individual vocabulary terms that are crucial for comprehension and understanding were transformed into flashcards. Each vocabulary term is matched with its corresponding definition (again, written at a language-appropriate level) and then translated into Spanish

You do not want to miss out on this great resource, which can be used in a variety of ways in your classroom. It's a great task to assign independently or you can facilitate collaboration with pairs or groups. Plus, you can challenge your ELLs by gradually removing some of the language supports (i.e. the translated cards).
