What educators are saying

I like how the task cards are available print or digital. These are great for students to practice making equivalent fractions.

Description

Here are 32 equivalent fraction multiple choice task cards to help reinforce your students' understanding of fraction equivalence. A student answer sheet and an answer key is also included so that students can self-check. In addition, there is also a Challenge Card which can be used with any other card to extend the activity. This card asks students to generate another equivalent fraction to the one on the card.

Note: This set has received a few poor ratings because the buyers mistakenly believed the answer key was not correct. Equivalent fractions can be tricky sometimes. For example, on card number 2, the fraction is 4/16. The correct answer is a. 3/12 (this is often a card that is sited as being incorrect).

4/16 = 1/4 = 3/12 (3x1=3 for the numerator and 3x4=12 for the denominator). Since both parts of the fraction are being multiplied by the same number, the fraction is equivalent.

You can find the equivalent for any fraction on this site:

Common Core Standards addressed in this set:

4.NF.1. Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.

4.NF.2. Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or

The skills are also foundational for this Common Core Standard:

5.NF.1. Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)
