Description

Equivalent Fraction Understanding - Level 1 of this series demonstrates the equal areas of two equivalent fractions. However, in Level 2, the mathematical meaning is that the two fractions are equivalent due to the fact that they student is ACTUALLY multiplying by 1 WHOLE (2/2, 3/3, 4/4, etc.) - The Multiplicative Identity Property.

Level 2 is multiplication only.

However, the process is stair stepped. Level 2 only has missing denominators and numerators on the trailing fraction - which is the common case when computing equivalent fractions for adding or subtracting fractions with unlike denominators or comparing two or more fractions with unlike denominators.

Level 3 of this series will proceed with missing numerators and denominators in the leading and trailing fractions. Hence, the student must divide by One WHOLE (an improper fraction - 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, etc.).

Teacher should thoroughly model this process. The kiddos MUST show work as shown in the answer key to ensure they understand this process and its mathematical physical meaning.

Students MUST know their math facts to proficiency levels. Contrary to pedagogical belief of far too many teachers, children can master their math facts to high proficiency to nearly 100% of the students in either Title 1 or non-Title 1 elementary schools. However, it must be a goal of the teachers and school. There are papers on this website that describe the practice in accomplishing this objective.
