What educators are saying

I used the fraction materials with my granddaughter who is in third grade as a review. I want to help prepare her for end of grade tests.
I used this resource during Saturday School Intervention and it was a great practice for my students.

Description

This set of games, task cards, and worksheet is designed to help students understand and identify basic equivalent fractions using visual models. It is aligned to 3rd grade math standards.

EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS GAME

Students match up pairs of cards that show the same fractional part. Guide lines are included on the fraction circles to help students see equivalence. This can be played as a concentration/memory type game or used for a simple matching activity. Includes 30 equivalent fractions cards - 15 show parts of a whole (circle model) and 15 show parts of a group.

EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS ON A NUMBER LINE TASK CARDS

Each card shows two number lines divided into different fractional parts. Students find and record the equivalent fractions. For example, on the card showing a number line with halves and a number line with fourths, students would identify 1/2 and 2/4 as the two fractions that are equivalent. Several cards have more than one correct answer.

Includes 2 differentiated sets - One has the fractions labeled on the number line. The other has the lines but they are not labeled. Includes 16 cards (8 in each set), recording sheet, and answer key.

WORKSHEET

Students look at each picture representation and circle the equivalent fractions that match it. There are two correct answers for each one, so students will have to understand how fractions of a group can be shown in more than one way. They also must match fraction circles that are equivalent.

DIGITAL ACTIVITY

The worksheet and task cards are also provided as digital activities in Easel. They can be assigned in your online learning platform and students can complete them on any device. For more information on Easel Activities see this GETTING STARTED GUIDE.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a number line.
Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, (e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3). Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Express whole numbers as fractions, and recognize fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers. Examples: Express 3 in the form 3 = 3/1; recognize that 6/1 = 6; locate 4/4 and 1 at the same point of a number line diagram.
Explain why a fraction š˜¢/š˜£ is equivalent to a fraction (š˜Æ Ɨ š˜¢)/(š˜Æ Ɨ š˜£) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
