What educators are saying

Loved! Loved! Loved! Used this with a grade 4 online tutoring student. I used the zoom annotation tool to assist her, and she had a copy of the printed sheets that could assist her in answering the questions.
My students LOVED this escape room! We did not finish it in one day and they kept asking when they would have time to complete it. Such a fun way to practice their math and collaboration skills.

Description

Fourth graders will love using their knowledge of equivalent fractions and their ability to compare fractions in this engaging digital escape room activity. Simplifying and reducing fractions and vocabulary such as numerator and denominator will play a key role in this challenging math game. When a baker gets tired of giving tours and field trips, she decides to turn her bakery into an escape room. Can your students put fractions into simplest forms to measure the ingredients for a cake? Can they compare fractions to open a lock? They'll need these skills to complete the five fun puzzles in this educational breakout activity.

The escape room process is automated using a Google Form™ (no e-mail addresses required). Simply scan the provided QR code or click on the link to get your students started. This activity is low prep, only few pages to print, and highly engaging! Use this online breakout in the classroom in groups, or for distance learning or virtual school. Homeschool parents and kids also love these easy to use escape rooms to spice up their math lessons!

Included in this 4th grade fractions activity:

  • QR code and URL link to Google Form™
  • Visual fraction models to help students solve the challenges (optional)
  • Optional success signs for your class to snap photos with when they are done
  • Quick start guide & detailed instructions
  • Full answer key & teacher tips
  • Five puzzles in an automated Google Form™

This is a great fraction review activity, or can be used as enrichment for younger grades. Use it as a cooperative learning math activity, or allow individual students use it for a fun Friday game. Because there is virtually no prep for this activity, it makes a great last minute worksheet alternative for a substitute teacher!

In order to complete the challenges, students must be able to:

  • Reduce fractions to their simplest terms
  • Find the missing numerator or denominator to form equivalent fractions
  • Compare fractions using <, >, and = symbols using such strategies as comparing with visual models, using benchmark fractions, or finding common denominators
  • Find the lowest common denominator of two fractions (find the LCM of two numbers)
  • Know fraction vocabulary such as the terms numerator and denominator
  • Solve simple substitution ciphers

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout. The escape room is automated by a Google Form™, but does not require the teacher or students to have Google™ accounts.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge very quickly (20 minutes), others will take longer. The majority of students will take between 40-60 minutes. The form will not save student data (unless students are logged into Google accounts), so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

Check out all of Great Classroom Escape's 4th grade math activities! All activities are standards based! This activity covers concepts in common core standards 4.NF.A.1 and 4.NF.A.2.

Explain why a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 × 𝘢)/(𝘯 × 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
