Learning Objective

Students will evaluate competing design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Description

Students will research an ecological issue and form a solution. Great for environmental science or Earth Day! They will communicate their ideas for protecting an ecosystem to their peers. They will evaluate solutions for environmental and biodiversity issues. ♻️

♻️This resource addresses a challenging standard for MS in the NGSS:

Students will come up with an ecological problem specific to the region where they live. They will research and learn more about the problem, obtain information about that problem, and develop a solution that they will present to their peers.

The Environmental Resource includes:

  • worksheets that guide the research
  • a slide show of a sample lesson
  • Thinking Cards to stimulate ideas for research
  • presentation checklist
  • reflection page
  • title page
  • reference page
  • sample of student work and directions for the teacher

Teachers Love This Human Impact Resource!❤️❤️❤️

Aimie ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied

Due to distance learning, I only used the research project for invasive species, but loved it. Next year, I will give students the other options as choices.

This resource is designed to address the Disciplinary Core Ideas for NGSS Ecosystem: Interactions, Energy, and dynamics.

Covers NGSS standards MS-LS2-5 and Utah SEEd 6.4.5

Students will use the following Science and Engineering Practices:

Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering)

Analyzing and interpreting data.

Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering)

Engaging in argument from evidence

Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

✅NGSS MS-LS2-5.

Evaluate competing design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services.* [Clarification Statement: Examples of ecosystem services could include water purification, nutrient recycling, and prevention of soil erosion. Examples of design solution constraints could include scientific, economic, and social considerations.]

✅Utah SEEd

6.4.5  Evaluate competing design solutions for preserving ecosystem services that protect resources and biodiversity based on how well the solutions maintain stability within the ecosystem.  Emphasize obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information about different design solutions.  Examples could include policies affecting ecosystems, responding to invasive species or solutions for the preservation of ecosystem resources specific to Utah, such as air, water quality and prevention of soil erosion.

This resource also makes a perfect Earth Day project. Students will research and look at current environmental problems in their area. They will research what is causing it, what has already been tried already, and they will come up with an idea to address the problem They will present their ecological idea to the rest of the class. ✍
