This rubric can help you assess the ETS Strand of NGSS, the Science and Engineering Practices, Project Lead the Way design projects and any STEM challenge using the engineering design process.

Indicators are provided for each step of the design process. You can use the rubric to guide your students as they develop solutions to the problem presented. The rubric clearly outlines what you will be assessing at each step of the process and allows for student and teacher evaluations.

This rubric is included with each of the design challenges in my store.

This engineering design process rubric includes

  • A simplified rubric with 2-3 indicators for each step of the engineering design process
  • A more detailed rubric with additional indicators for each step of the engineering design process, and space for self assessment and teacher evaluation
  • Printable PDF, Google, and Easel versions of the rubrics

NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSSMS-ETS1-4
Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
NGSSMS-ETS1-1
Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
NGSSMS-ETS1-3
Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
