Description
This PowerPoint covers Fear and Disgust.
WHAT DOES FEAR MEAN TO YOU?
WHAT TRIGGERS FEAR IN THE BRAIN?
Fear is a chain reaction in the brain that starts with a stressful stimulus and ends with the release of chemicals that cause a racing heart, fast breathing and energized muscles, among other things, also known as the fight-or-flight response.
Facts about fear
An unpleasant feeling triggered by the perception of danger, real or imagined.
As long as there's no actual threat, try breathing slowly and deeply to reduce feelings of fear. Talking with a friend or family member may also help.
How can we respond well?
- When you start feeling afraid you can turn to someone for help.
- Crying is a reflex response to fear. You can panic when you get afraid and this can release a strong emotional response.
How can I rid fear of my mind?
- 5) Use the AWARE technique
- A: Accept the anxiety. Don't try to fight it.
- W: Watch the anxiety. Just watch it and when you notice it, scale your level of fear and start to breathe longer on the out-breath.
- A: Stands for 'Act normally'. ...
- R: Repeat the above steps in your mind if necessary.
- E: Expect the best.
WHAT IS DISGUST?
noun
A feeling of revulsion or strong disapproval aroused by something unpleasant or offensive.
"the sight filled her with disgust"
There are different elements of the response that are psychologically bound together, and they all tend to happen when you feel disgusted by something.
Disgust keeps us away from things that we think are gross or unbeneficial to us in this way.
HOW DO YOU REACT WITH DISGUST TO THIS SCENARIO?
You’re sitting at home with an ipad, scrolling through YouTube when you see a video labeled: “16 year old boy eats a live tarantula.” Turn to your partner and tell them what you think. How would you respond?
