What educators are saying

I absolutely love these sub plans! The sub will need other materials but I just keep them all located in a tub labeled SUB PLANS!
This was such a great resource that saved me a ton of time! We are required to have 3 days of emergency plans ready to go, so this was perfect to print and prepare, and leave in case of an emergency absence. The required materials were easy to find, and available in most classrooms. Thank you!

Description

EMERGENCY SUB PLANS for First Grade

This packet includes 5 full days of emergency sub plans for first grade teachers. (The lessons don't have to be used consecutively.)

The lessons are detailed and provide instruction and activities for reading, writing, word work/phonics, math, and science & social studies. I've also included a "Smart Art" activity for each of the 5 days as an additional (but optional) filler.

All the activities and lessons are developmentally appropriate for 1st grade and are open-ended to allow for children of multiple ability levels to participate successfully.

The lesson plans reflect expectations aligned with standards and focus on skills and strategies such as:

READING - FICTION & NONFICTION:

character analysis, story sequence, predictions, prior knowledge, comparing, summarizing, vocabulary development

WORD WORK / PHONICS:

beginning sounds, ending sounds, medial vowel sounds, syllables, and early sight words

MATH:

sums to 12, doubles facts, greater than/less than,... most in game form

SCIENCE / SOCIAL STUDIES:

sources of light, needs/wants, living/nonliving, a beginning biography, and more...

There is also a daily WRITING activity and an optional daily SMART ART activity which includes a super simple art project connected to a related poem or song. There is plenty to keep the sub and the children engaged at a time when you need it most.

To prepare your emergency sub plans, you'll need to gather a few common items, many of which are probably available among your classroom materials or your school's general supply closet.

Things will you need to buy, get, or borrow include:

  • 5-6 decks of playing cards
  • 20-24 dice
  • bingo chips or counters
  • old magazines
  • white and black construction paper
  • plain white copy paper
  • pipe cleaners and straws
  • general student supplies like, scissors, glue sticks, crayons, and markers
