What educators are saying

Great resource to open discussions on "good" versus "bad" science. I will use this resource again next year.
This was a perfect addition to my emergency sub plans for physical science, but it could really be used in any science class.

Description

We are constantly bombarded with "clickbait" headlines making all sorts of scientific claims. Unfortunately, if it sounds too good to be true, or too crazy to believe, it probably is. Although it may seem that these headlines are harmless, they actually can carry some pretty heavy consequences for our health, actions, and decision-making. How do you know if a claim is true? Let's take a look at four headlines from different news agencies and examine the claims, evidence and science behind them.

This 4 page, EDITABLE, No-Prep assignment is meant to be completed individually and is perfect for an emergency sub plan in any science class. Each page asks students to analyze text and graphs. Print it out, and you're ready to go. This particular assignment addresses sample size, control groups, confirmation bias, funding bias, correlation vs. causation and media reporting.

Included in this file is a PDF and a Word document so you can feel free to use "as is" or modify and differentiate to fit your classroom and students' needs. Enjoy!
