Description

The Clown Who Couldn't Smile is a fun drama stage script set in a circus that explores what really makes us happy. Great for mixed age groups and abilities.

Suitable for students aged 9+

Cast size: 32 characters

Can increase cast size to 36 characters by including extra circus performers and clowns in non-speaking roles.

Can reduce cast size to 26 characters by giving some students 2 roles to perform - please note, this might result in some fast costume changes!

Running time: approximately 40 minutes*

*If you choose, you can utilise your school gymnasts, dancers and comedians to include a full circus routine at the end of this play which would extend the running time.

The Clown Who Couldn't Smile is a lovely one act stage script for younger performers and it would work really well with a group of students of mixed ages. Bonzo the Clown has lost his smile and is in danger of getting thrown out of the circus. His fellow performers and friends all try to help - but what will restore Bonzo's smile, and will he get it back in time? This is a great play to introduce younger students to performing and is particularly helpful for including less confident students in non-speaking roles. It provides fabulous opportunities to include circus acts and clown routines and is lots of fun to perform. We particularly enjoyed designing our own individual clown make-up! The play also encourages discussions about what makes us happy and what makes us smile.

This script includes fabulous full production notes, with ideas for staging, props and furniture, lighting, sound effects, any music and some brilliant detailed suggestions for costumes and make-up. It also contains great follow-on activities covering story, characters, theme, script layout and performance-related tasks for further work in the classroom or drama studio.

If you are giving a performance of this play to an audience, regardless of whether you charge admission or not, you must purchase the appropriate Performance Rights License, available in this store.
