El Deafo by Cece Bell: A Google Slides/PDF/Easel Novel Study

Overview:

This versatile product is a custom made, ready-to-use novel study that offers the buyer three different formats! It is a google slides product complete with text boxes for use digitally in distance learning. It is also a completed "Easel by TpT" activity that makes it possible for students with any device to use the editable text boxes that have already been installed to complete the entire workbook digitally. Being a PDF, this can also be printed and used with pencil and paper.

Designed for grades 4-7 who are reading the 2015 Newbery Honor Book and NYT Bestseller, El Deafo, by Cece Bell, this packet includes a 26-page student booklet (or use it as separate worksheets if you prefer), an answer key, a listing of vocabulary words found in the book, and a chart showing the CCSS (common core standards) that are supported. Mini-lessons guide students as they read and practice essential reading and writing skills.

Skills that are addressed in the student booklet include the following:

comprehension, vocabulary, components of a graphic novel, inference, citing textual evidence, making connections to the reading, recognizing a metaphor, noticing character traits, compare & contrast, cause & effect, theme and author's purpose, writing to express opinions, writing a summary, and conducting research.

El Deafo in a Nutshell:

This book is both a GRAPHIC NOVEL and a MEMOIR: what an unusual and memorable combination! It is the touching and inspiring story of the author's childhood. As a young child she contracted meningitis which left her deaf. The memoir is presented in the format of a graphic novel and follows Cece as she wrestles with making and keeping friends and trying to fit-in and be normal. It covers her life from age four to grade six and gives the reader a window on the challenges that she faced. The book is funny, poignant, and inspiring. Without a doubt, it will promote empathy and inclusion in both middle school and elementary students!
