What educators are saying

My students loved playing this game in class. They though they were just playing a game and having a good time without realizing they were reading and learning. I appreciate the simplicity of this activity as well!

Description

This popular apple and worm themed game transforms math or literacy skill practice into a suspenseful & exciting experience ... kids LOVE it! It’s perfect for practicing sight words, math facts, letters, numbers, sounds, vocabulary, or anything you want it to work with!

*** My class loves this game so much that we play a new, fun seasonal version of it every month! Want the money-saving bundle so you can have them all? HERE IT IS!

Materials:

  • A paper lunch bag for each student… a cute apple cover and quick editable directions are included for kids to glue on the front.
  • A page (or more, depending how many you want) of apples you’ve typed on in Google Slides.  The text on the fish is 100% EDITABLE!  Add your words, math facts, letters, numbers, or whatever you want! (see preview for example)

Directions:

  1. Prep: Students cut apart the pieces.  Show them how to just snip them into rectangles… do NOT waste time cutting out the fancy details. Put the cards into the bag.
  2. Play: WITHOUT LOOKING, pull out a paper.  If they can read the word (or whatever the skill is), they keep it.  If they aren’t sure, they can ask a friend, put it back in the bag and be ready to know it next time they pull it out.
  3. Object: See how many apples you can get before you get one with a WORM!  Once you get one of those, you have to put all the apples back in the bag.  Play again and try to beat your record!
  4. Tip: Model how to say, “Oh well!” if you get a worm. Emphasize how much fun it is if you don’t peek and get surprised by what you get!

Ideas:

I like having kids play it in class ...and parents love it when I send it home to play/practice there, too.  I’ve also loved keeping it in class to use as a station, for subs, fast-finishers, or just for fun!

I've played this game with my kindergarten and 1st graders every year for a LONG time and it's always been a hit! I'm excited I'm finally sharing it with you here!
