    Earth's Atmosphere

Want an ENGAGING introduction to Earth's atmosphere?! Ever get tired of introducing topics the same way? This introduction to Earth's atmosphere and the characteristics of the atmosphere will get kids OUT of their seats, walking around the room, reading, and filling in their note foldable. It's a GREAT change of pace!

    This is how it works:

➤Print the 6 posters on Earth's atmosphere. They cover: composition of the atmosphere, regulation of temperature, density of layers, solids found in the atmosphere, smog, pollution, ozone, and ultraviolet light.

➤Hang the posters around your room.

➤Print a foldable for each student. Student's travel around the room, reading the posters, filling the information in their fill-in-the-blank style foldable.

➤Re-read/ review posters while projecting them on a screen; go over answers in foldable

    Layers of the Atmosphere

Want a student-centered project on the layers of Earth's atmosphere?! This is a class favorite every year and the BEST way to learn the layers of the atmosphere! Here is how it works...

    ►Break class into 5 groups

►Assign each group ONE layer of the atmosphere

►Provided handout gives a list of characteristics of each layer of the atmosphere

►Students work in their group to create their layer of the atmosphere - but there's a catch!

►Each fact MUST be represented by a symbol or picture

►When layers are complete, each group presents their layer and explains the meaning of each picture or symbol

►As they present, the rest of the class draws each symbol/ picture in their foldable

❤️This is always a class favorite. Hang the layers in the hallway after!❤️

The Water Cycle and Weather - Diagramming Activity - Draw and Explain

Need a little more content than "the water cycle" for your middle school students? Take it one step further. In this engaging activity, students will review the water cycle, read about why water condenses, apply that knowledge to 5 scenarios, then break down one of those scenarios into 4 pictures with captions.

❤️I like to turn this into a little project in my classroom. After we think/pair/share about the five scenarios and discuss as a class, I want my students BEST work in drawing and explaining ONE of those scenarios.

❄️Example of scenario: A glass of ice cold lemonade is poured in a kitchen. The ice cold glass is then taken outside, where it is 100 degrees and stifling hot! Beads of water appear on the outside of the glass. Why? Where did the water come from?

In this scenario ☝ a student would break it into 4 parts. Picture 1 might be of a glass of lemonade, with the caption reading "a nice glass of lemonade is poured inside.' Picture 2 shows the glass outside and is labeled "the glass of lemonade is taken outside, where it is hot." Picture 3 shows the cold glass cooling the air around it and reads "the ice cold glass cools the air surround it." Picture 4 shows beads of water on the glass and reads "The air around the glass, now cooled, cannot hold as much water and it is forced to condense. This is where the water on the outside of the glass comes from."

❄️I laminate my students posters and have them read to the class. This helps SO MUCH when we go to discuss high and low pressure systems and fronts!!! Students NEED to understand WHY water condenses.

    Fronts, Systems, and Forecasting Weather

Looking for a weather forecasting project?! Need some straight forward content on fronts and pressure systems?! This resource has ALL of that done for you! The first graphic organizer is on types of fronts - cold fronts, warm fronts, occluded fronts, and stationary fronts. Teacher key provided. I use this to teach types of fronts. The second graphic organizer is on high and low pressure systems. Teacher key provided. There is also an additional 3rd student handout on pressure system practice.

❤️Then the BEAUTY of this resource!! A weather ❄️ forecasting project! 14 UNIQUE weather maps (and an extra blank, in case a student wants to draw their own). Students will work in pairs to write and present their forecast for 5 states (United States) based on the location of fronts and systems moving across the country. My students LOVE this project. I let them make up forecaster names and tv stations and they get SUPER creative!

Weather Instruments: Sorting Cards and Foldable

Engage your students with something as simple as weather instruments! Students will sort out weather instrument names, pictures of the instruments, and what they measure. Once sorted, record what instrument measure in a foldable. Re-sort the cards for 2 or 3 days in a row. It's a great formative assessment, and it's NOT a worksheet! A great class warm-up!
