What does this Earth Day Slideshow include?

Here’s what the “Just One Earth” slideshow includes:

▶ Our Home Planet

The first section of the slideshow includes slides outlining the features that make Earth special and allow humans to survive here (water, air, sunlight, food, and building materials). With two or three sentences per slide, the information is presented in simple, child-friendly language and is accompanied by photographs and other graphics that support comprehension.

▶ Changes to the Earth

This section gives students information about human impact on Earth and our environment. The slides off simple explanations of water scarcity and pollution.

▶ How We Can Help

The third section tells students about actions they and their family members can take to help the planet Earth. Examples in this part include conserving water and electricity, picking up trash, and planting trees and gardens. These items provide a great springboard for deeper conversations about how we all can work to help our planet.

▶ Follow-Up Activities

The final section includes five slides with discussion prompts. Four of these prompts offer scenarios with possible solutions for students to talk about. The fifth slide includes an explanation of the terms. “reduce,” “reuse,” and “recycle,” and invites students to discuss ways they can incorporate those habits into their lives.

How can I use this Earth Day slideshow in my kindergarten or first-grade classroom?

You can use this slideshow as you would a nonfiction read-aloud book. Project the presentation onto a classroom screen and read aloud, pausing for questions and conversations. Because the text is written using simple language, you may choose to use the slideshow for a shared reading experience as you might use a big book. To extend this lesson on both ends, consider beginning with a KWL chart to access students’ prior knowledge and questions about the topic. You can then follow the slideshow by filling in the “L” column of the chart with things the students have learned.
