Learning Objective

Students will work cooperatively in a small group as they read the Earth Day script. Students will improve their reading fluency each time they read the script.

Description

This Earth Day script has parts for 13 readers. (A smaller group could easily perform this, however, by simply assigning students multiple parts.)

The script is six pages. The script begins with students talking with their teacher about Earth Day. The teacher challenges them to return the next day with ideas on how THEY could help care for the earth. Children talk with their parents and each other, and come up with quite a list of easy changes they could make that would also help conserve the earth's resources.

When students have finished reading the script, they can complete the follow-up worksheet activity. All of the small changes from the script are listed in a table format. Students read each action and identify the character who came up with the idea. Then, each student makes a self-assessment to determine the degree to which THEY perform each of the Earth-friendly actions that were mentioned. They draw a star or a checkmark beside at least three Earth-friendly actions that they hope to implement in their own life.
