ESL Newcomer Math Curriculum

This outline can be used as a guideline on where to start with your newcomer ELLs when they are just learning math vocabulary. This can be used in conjunction with the regular education math class as a differentiation tool.

Objective: Focusing on vocabulary and language necessary for students to be successful in math classes

I created this curriculum specifically for my ESL students who are new to the country. Many times teachers believe that math is the universal language but there is actually a lot of vocabulary that needs to be taught. In this document, I outline the vocabulary and skills that I would teach my students in order throughout the year. Because I primarily teach middle school students, I have included the math skills they need to know which you can differentiate for your class and students needs. This is designed to support teachers and students so students can be successful in mainstream math classes. I created this outline with my middle school students in mind, so you may need to add in other content for your students.
