Description

These ESL Newcomer Activities will help your students stay in the target language in a comfortable and non-threatening way. It includes a large variety of engaging activities that students will enjoy throughout the entire school year.

1. Conversation Boards: Levels 1 and 2

On each conversation board there are 6 boxes. Inside each box there are 6 questions. Each box has a different theme.

  • Box #1: Personal Information
  • Box #2: Likes and Dislikes
  • Box #3: School/ Colors
  • Box #4: Family
  • Box #5: Food
  • Box #6: Weather/ Seasons

Students will roll two dice. The dice need to be of two different colors. The first die determines the box number and the second die determines the question number. Students will ask and answer the question with each other. Students then roll the dice again and the conversation continues in this same manner until the teacher decides that the students have had sufficient time for conversation.

2. Double Bubble Activity:

This is a follow up activity for 6 X 6 conversation game. Students write 4 sentences that pertain ONLY to themselves. Then, they write 4 sentences that pertain ONLY to their conversation partner. Finally, they write 4 sentences to describe what things they have in common with their partner.

3. Vocabulary List: Goals for the Year

Students will learn vocabulary that will help them become successful in the ESL classroom.

4. Conversation Cards (Set of 24 cards)

These cards can be used to introduce the vocabulary for “Goals for the Year”. Includes directions for three fun, interactive Conversation Activities.

5. “Find Someone Who…” Five different worksheets (Levels 1 and 2)

Students will get out of their chairs and walk around during this mingle activity. They will ask each other the questions indicated in each of the boxes on the worksheet. For example:

Student A: Are you going to speak more English this year?

Student B: Yes, I am. I'm going to speak more English.

OR

Student B: No, I'm not. I'm not going to speak more English.

When a student finds another student, who answers the question affirmatively, he writes that person’s name in the box. The first student with the most signatures wins the game.

6. Mingle Activities:

Students will get to know each other better with yet another interactive mingle activity. Also, included is a follow up writing activity.

DIRECTIONS ARE INCLUDED FOR ALL ACTIVITIES IN THIS UNIT.
