Description

Math has proven to be a "sticking point" for those learning -- and teaching -- English. Supposedly, math "doesn't involve English," and in fact, English Language Learners are often required to take standardized math tests -- even if the students have just arrived in the country or have been in the country for less than a year. Yet it does not take long to realize that the connection between math success and language success is a close one.

This slideshow provides a very basic introduction to word problems for English Language Learners, whether they are in 4th grade, high school, or adult education.. Using pictures and math symbols, the slide show provides a chance for learners to become familiar with the language necessary to succeed.

Some suggestions for how the PowerPoint can be used:

*Whole class activity for English Language Learners

*Individualized activity for English Language Learners. Assign a student to this show on a computer. You need to be sure that the student knows how to read English before doing so, however.

I hope that this will contribute to your English Language Learners' success in math!

Have fun Learning!
