Description

These 17 lessons focus on Combining and Separating Quantities for Early Stage One students, aligned with the 2022 NSW K-2 Syllabus. This series has been designed to assist busy teachers, including casual teachers, in delivering engaging and accessible instruction to their students.

They cover content including:

- addition and subtraction

- instructions to play games with an Aboriginal perspective

- comparing quantities

- number bonds

- counting and sharing

- building numbers with Rekenreks

- exploring numbers to ten

All lessons are hands on, using equipment already in the classroom or easily made resources to engage the students and apply the learning.

Six of the lessons have an Aboriginal perspective.

Bonus! I have included a list of Australian Literature to support teaching these outcomes.

These lessons are stand alone or can be combined to form a unit. Suitable for classroom teachers, learning support or casual teachers.

The following 2022 NSW syllabus outcomes are met with these lessons:

MAO-WM-01 develops understanding and fluency in mathematics through exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing, and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems, and communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly.
MAE-CSQ-01 reasons about number relations to model addition and subtraction by combining and separating and comparing collections.
MAE-CSQ-02 represents the relations between the parts that form the whole, with numbers up to 10.

Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
