Description
Practice, assess, and improve the reading AND writing skills of your high school and advanced middle school ELA students, all while preparing them for their standardized exams. This ELA Test Prep bundle allows you to target specific reading and writing skills and standards your students need help with most--without boring them to pieces or taking up weeks of instruction.
This no-prep, easy-to-use, time-saving Reading & Writing ELA Test Prep Bundle includes TWO teacher-favorite resources:
1) Snapshot Reading Assessments for Secondary ELA
Practice and assess reading skills by each individual Common Core standard! This resource includes 16 short but rigorous reading passages, each with several questions assessing students’ proficiency in an individual standard. That way, you can measure student progress with each standard, identify areas of struggle, and provide targeted, time-saving, and differentiated practice opportunities where they need them most
Great for:
• Pre-tests/baseline assessment
• Post-tests/formative assessment
• Practice work
• Bell Work
• Exit Tickets
• Mini-lessons
• Tutoring/interventions
• Skill review
Readings are at a rigor level appropriate for high school or advance middle school students. Passages include public domain works as well excerpts from a variety of authors such as Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jane Austen, Dylan Thomas, Shakespeare, Theodore Roosevelt, Frederick Douglass, Elie Wiesel, Abraham Lincoln and more. The snapshot assessments are provided as both editable Word documents as well as PDFs, just in case there are any technical issues due to software versions.
2) Flash Writing: Thesis Writing, Essay Planning & Timed Writing Prep Activity
Help your students prepare for their state timed writing assessments by practicing critical writing skills without writing (or grading) entire essays. This activity allows students to practice essay planning, thesis statements and topic sentences all while encouraging them to use their time efficiently so that the bulk of their effort can be devoted to the actual writing stage of the process.
The resource includes 34 informative and argumentative writing prompts, each of which can be used as a mini-lesson or full lesson. For each one, students are given 10 minutes to identify the type of prompt (informative or argumentative) and create an outline, including a working thesis statement and three topic sentences. When time is up, students share their work and discuss strengths and ideas for improvement. Afterwards, a model outline is provided, demonstrating different ways to effectively and quickly plan for each type of writing.
Great for:
• Thesis Writing Practice
• Essay Planning Practice
• Timed Writing Practice
• Bell Work
• Mini-Lessons or Full Lessons
• Tutoring/Interventions
Included as both a fully editable PowerPoint activity as well as a PDF to ensure compatibility. Also includes an essay planning handout as well as rubrics similar to those used in state exams—should you choose to have your students write a full essay.
Works well as an individual, pair or small group activity. Each prompt can be used for a full lesson or as a warm-up. And because there is simply not time enough to always write and grade essays, this is the perfect activity to keep your students continually practicing the most important skills. I have used this strategy for years with my own students with great success.
From Common Core to individual state standards, from the FAST to the PARCC, STARR, AIR, and everything in-between, both you and your students can feel confident, knowing they are well-prepared for whatever ELA state assessment comes their way.
WHAT TEACHERS HAVE TO SAY:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “This was one of the best purchases I made on TPT. It is something I am able to pull out and use easily. It targets EXACTLY what my students need. I am able to use it to target specific needs of students. I have used this resource for quite some time so it was well worth the money.” – The Kilted English Teacher
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “You have created an easy-to-use set of assessments that is precisely what I need to capture what students really know and what they need to work on. I love that each passage has the standards clearly identified, making standards-based reporting a breeze. I have been trying to tell my colleagues that we need to be assessing skills in this manner for years, but I have never had the time or the foresight to set it up in such an organized fashion. The essay-planning prompts are also relevant and interesting for students. I will definitely use these to teach essay structure and to practice multiple prompts for test prep. Thank you for a great resource!” – Jacqueline F.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “I have used this resource over and over again for all of my classes. It really lets me see where they stand and prepares them for end of course assessments.” —Celia S.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Great resources to prepare students for state assessment tests. Well organized and carefully planned. Uses higher level thinking skills. Another great product from this seller.” – Writer’s Corner
