How to Use the Self-Checking Resources:
Note: The slides are formatted to be self-checking and to provide immediate feedback to students. Do not edit the slides or grant editing rights to students. Students should play this activity in "view only" permissions on Google Slides. Editing this resource will alter the formatting and remove the self-checking feature. The activity must be played in "present/slideshow" mode in order for the self-checking feature to work.
**The Google Slides are not graded but, rather, give students instant feedback telling them if their answer is correct or prompting them to review the passage again if their answer is incorrect.
These resource is designed to be a no-prep tool in your review toolbox. They do not populate a grade but are designed for student ELA review and formative learning.
To use for independent work:
-Assign a "view only" copy to students on Google Classroom or other platform
-Students open the activity and go to "present/slideshow" mode
-Students read the passage and answer 5 questions
-If they answer correctly, they move on to the next question
-If they are incorrect, they are sent back to review the passage and try again
-Students move through the entire activity
-Use for in class review, bell ringers, or homework
To use as a whole group review:
-Open the Google Slides on Interactive Board (students could follow along on their device)
-Click "Present/Slideshow"
-Read the questions aloud or in small groups
-Answer the question (individually, in teams, etc.)
Extension Option: If you use PearDeck in your classroom, you can add your own constructed response questions to extend play using the PearDeck Chrome extension
The short passages are written within a loose middle grades Lexile framework. No normal difficulty is assigned, but you may review the preview and "included" section in the listing to see if this is appropriate for your students! The brevity of the passages is designed to encourage students to quickly read through and review, encouraging fluency. The design allows students to receive quicker feedback while still reviewing to find the text evidence to support the question's answer. Instant feedback keeps students engaged while building endurance, avoiding student burnout.
