Earth Day activity...

I invite you this Earth Day to tell a different kind of story, one with a different kind of message- hope.

A World Worth Imagining was inspired by a wonderful group of young people I have taught for many years. One Earth Day morning standing by our pond, I invited the children to close their eyes and imagine what it might look like in one hundred years. One of the girls refused, believing that the world would have been destroyed by then.

That was really heartbreaking and in that moment, I realized that our young people do understand the crisis facing the planet and its people, those messages are coming to them loud and clear. They hear it, feel it, and they understand the responsibility that comes with it. But the messages that they weren’t hearing, were the ones that spoke of hope for what our future could look like. The ones that said, “but if we get it all right- this is what’s possible”.

So, that morning sitting by the pond, I committed to creating a different kind of story for our children, for all of us really-- one that will plant a seed and be that voice that speaks up when change seems impossible, “but, what if…”.
