What educators are saying

I used this as part of a unit on women breaking boundaries in music and other areas outside of music. It was great! My students found it fascinating.
I love teaching this story during Hispanic Heritage month. This was a great addition to my usual lesson. My students enjoyed learning and playing the instrument accompaniments.

Description

Drum Dream Girl is an amazing story about a Cuban girl achieving her dream of playing drums in a band, just like the boys. In this lesson students will learn about Millo Castro Zaldarriaga and her story. Students will also learn simple rhythmic percussion parts to express their own drumming ideas. There are also optional Orff-based pitched percussion parts that can be played as well.

Students are then asked about their dreams and how they can turn those dreams into rhythms, songs, and improvisation springboards.

This lesson is great for many age levels and can be used any time of year or during Hispanic Heritage Month.
