What educators are saying

I used this in my Technical Math class at the end of the geometry unit. The students did well and gave them some real life understanding of designing a house.
Loved seeing the creative ways students designed their houses to fit the project. Allowed so much freedom for the students to express themselves

Description

Take your Dream House project and ramp it up a notch with this 21st Century Math Project! A staple experience of math classrooms across the country, this take on the Dream House project focuses on Area, Perimeter and Scale skills. Students are scaffolded conceptually and mathematically by the time they are asked to design their own Dream House!

In this product you will receive a 48 page PDF which includes: 3 different assignments, 1 project, and charts and necessary attachments. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. REDOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE IT ALREADY***

****THIS FILE NOW CONTAINS A METRIC VERSION****

- In “Apartment Renovation" students will familiarize themselves with architectural symbols, scale, area and perimeter calculations.

- In “Design a Kitchen” students will measure scale drawings and be introduced to some simpler building codes. They will conclude by drawing their own scale kitchen that meets code.

- In “New Home Builder” students will be asked to appraise the value of houses based on the square footage of their blueprints. They will use Nearby Home Sales to estimate the new home's worth!

- In "Dream House" students will put their practice to use by designing their own dream house. A number of handout resources make this more convenient.

Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.
Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.
