CCSS.RI.5.6, CCSS.W.5.2.A-E

This is a webquest activity that has students analyze four different accounts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech, and find similarities and differences among the sources/documents.

The accounts of this event are in a variety of formats, from multiple sources (firsthand accounts of the event, videos, and a newspaper article).

Students will determine whether each document is a firsthand or secondhand account, the author's purpose of each source, and analyze for important details/information about them. Students will then compare and contrast two of the documents, drawing on details from each text.

In addition to supporting the common core informational text standards involving multiple accounts of the same event/topic, this product also supports common core informational writing standards. Included with this product is a text-based writing prompt and planning sheet, requiring students to inform about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s famous, “I Have a Dream” speech.
