Doodle Notes - Core Knowledge Language Arts, 2nd Grade

In our 2nd Grade classroom, CKLA is the most popular part of our day!! We learn all about social studies and science topics, an assortment of 13 in total. This is part of the Listening and Learning component of Core Knowledge, where students are expected to listen to an interactive read-aloud. These read-alouds incorporate complex topics and vocabulary that a typical 2nd grader would find too difficult to read about independently. Core Knowledge does incorporate follow-up activities within its curriculum, but I found that my students did not find these as engaging as I'd hoped, so I created my own!

The preview to this product shows a completed version of the Fairy Tale and Tall Tale Domain. All colored aspects were added by me, and the navy blue handwriting represents potential student answers - having these references on hand will help to ensure that students are recording all necessary information. The originals include all uncolored doodles and blank areas for students to fill in.

The full product is the COMPLETE set of doodle notes, consisting of all 2nd grade content during the Listening and Learning block of the Core Knowledge Curriculum (12 Domains + A study of South America). The notes are meant to be used as a review of the story that was just heard. My fast finishers ALWAYS took notes in a way that would leave the rest of my class in their dust. These Doodle notes will give students plenty to color as they wait for their peers to record the necessary information. Adding color is engaging, but more importantly, it adds value to the included diagrams and models. Giving students more to do and an engaging method of taking notes will allow for the differentiation that Listening and Learning sometimes lacks. Students learn with their "art-brains" just as much as they learn with their "reading-and-writing brains"!! Combining note-taking and art is my way of encouraging them to take control of their learning.

These doodle notes make for an easy, fun, and interactive review of the story the students will have just heard. I intend to have the students glue these pages into a composition notebook, or store them in a file envelope upon completion. You could also hole punch and place into a 3-ring binder. Having a full collection of notes will allow students to reference previous Domains, which puts the spiral-effect of Core Knowledge to its best use! My students will complete some pages as we read, some in groups, some in pairs, and we will complete some as a whole class using the document camera. They will bring their entire collection of notes home to study, and to share all of the amazing things they are learning with family.
