What type of problems can I expect to find in this “Dividing Whole Numbers by Unit Fractions” packet?

  • Each problem in this packet involves a whole number divided by a unit fraction (a numerator of one).
  • Students will see computation problems (numbers only) as well as word problems.  The word problems help students visualize how this topic could be used in the real world.
  • For each problem, students model the whole number using circles.  This helps students see where one whole ends and the next begins, which can be confusing using tape diagrams.
  • Then students split each whole into the unit fraction indicated by the division equation.
  • Overwhelmed by modeling?  The detailed answer key and scripted instructional guide will walk you through exactly how to break this down for students so they understand dividing whole numbers by unit fractions at a foundational level!

What does Sally’s “gradual release model” entail?

  • Sally’s lessons follow an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format.  A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time.  This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated!
  • Sally’s packets also build slowly in difficulty.  We meet students where they are, regardless of level.  As students gain confidence, the problems get progressively harder.  Not all students will complete all problems and that is by design!
  • Each packet finishes with a “Challenge Page” for anyone who needs something extra!

In addition to the deliberate scaffolding, these Dividing Fractions with Models worksheets include an instructional guide jam-packed with teaching hacks and best practices.  There is also a “Misconceptions” section that allows you to be one step ahead of mistakes students are most likely to make.

This Dividing Fractions with Models packet is common core aligned to 5th grade standard 5.NF.7b (dividing whole numbers by unit fractions).

Interpret division of a whole number by a unit fraction, and compute such quotients. For example, create a story context for 4 ÷ (1/5), and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient. Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that 4 ÷ (1/5) = 20 because 20 × (1/5) = 4.
