Description

In 2010, I began participating in a math grant that had me engaging with the Common Core standards. This gave me a jump start to the current expectations in the mathematics classroom. Last school year was the first full year of implementation, and like many other math teachers I had to find a way to teach these standards in a way that worked for me. I was basically told to utilize Engage NY and that was it. While I review the California Framework and heavily referenced Engage and used their examples, I still put it into a format that worked for me and my students. I noticed that my students were not getting any repeated practice and the support for language was missing. As I created my own guided notes for students and was on the design team for district assessments, I learned a lot about the standards and how to deliver them to students. This school year, I’m teaching math to two different classes so I got to make corrections right away to what wasn’t working.

All of that led to my current guided notes for dividing fractions utilizing the standard algorithm (6.NS.1). I have included the handouts for students, exit tickets, teacher notes, and answers. In my classroom, I simply utilize a document camera to display what they should be doing in their notes. I used to make fancy PowerPoints, but I have found modeling how to take notes (highlighting, underlining, etc.) is almost like a think aloud and demonstrates to students what they should be doing.

I have broken this concept into 3 lessons, plus I have included a study guide and a quiz. I only have 50 minutes to teach each one, so if you have more time you could definitely combine them.

If you are new to teaching 6th grade or would just like another method to tackling this standard, I highly recommend this product. The majority of my students (and I teach a large portion of English Learners) mastered these concepts by the summative assessment.
