Description

Are you looking for an ENGAGING, HANDS ON activity for distributive property? Then look no further. This cut and paste activity consolidates the Distributive Property. 7.EE.A.1 8.EE.C.7b. 9.C1.4 The students cut out 15 Algebraic Expansion expressions and their job is to organize the steps in correct order, resulting in the steps involved to expand 4 expressions. This is not as easy as it may first seem, I have organized it so that the 4 expressions are almost identical except for the positioning of the negative signs, it causes the students to really think about the process.

Educators like you said:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"I really like the idea of using this type of manipulative with older kids. I think it adds a level of engagement that can be elusive with pen and paper. Nice job!" E.L.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"Great resource! Simple but effective. It was a great review!" Sue K.

Topics include:

✔️ a monomial multiplied by a binomial ADDED to a monomial multiplied by a binomial

✔️ a monomial multiplied by a binomial with a negative in the bracket MINUS a monomial multiplied by a binomial with a negative in the bracket

✔️ the expressions are very similar, the only thing different is the positioning of the negative signs, this engages the students since the variables are the same but slight differences in signs

One option would be to photocopy one page per student or pair of students, have the students cut out the strips of paper, organize them in sequential order, then glue them down in correct order.

This product includes:

✔️ Instruction sheet that can be handed out to the students

✔️ Practical Tips for Teachers sheet

✔️ Rationale - why use the product, how it helps the students with deeper understanding and ideas on how to differentiate the activity

✔️ EDITABLE One page handout with 15 strips of paper, ready to photocopy and cut

✔️ EDITABLE answer key

This is a fun, effective way to teach Distributive Property in Algebra.
