Description

Please note: This is an "Remote/Emergency Day" version of the "Architecture: Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House Paper Model & Mini Lesson!" The exact same files are included as the "Architecture: Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House Paper Model & Mini Lesson!", but in a Google Drive folder, for even easier "sharing" with your students during Remote Learning! (The paper model is included as well, although you may wish to wait to build this with your students upon return to the classroom!) The lesson takes about 90 minutes to complete.

Description:

Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois is a superb example of the International Style of architecture in the United States. Designed and completed by Mies van der Rohe from 1946-1951, the House was unlike any conceived before. An exterior expressed minimally of only glass and steel, the interior space is an open pavilion through which every season may be observed.

Farnsworth House is one of the most significant of Mies’ works. The last small house in a long series of house projects, Farnsworth House embodies an aesthetic culmination in Mies’ experiment with this building type. The house is perhaps one of the fullest expressions of modernist ideals realized in the United States. Significant to the home as well is the ill-fated relationship between architect and client, brought to light with included materials.

Introduce your students to this significant work of architecture through this mini-lesson!

Google Slides and Google Doc formats included. Share them with your class as an online editable document! Works well for “self-paced” learning, and perfect for a remote/emergency day lesson!
