Description

This activity will help students discover the slope and y-intercept of slope-intercept form.

Students will use prior knowledge of creating a table of values from an equation. Through graphing those values, student will observe and discover the meaning of y = mx + b, slope-intercept form.

This activity is to help students discover y = mx + b without being told its meaning. It should be done after students know how to graph by making a table of values, but before students know y = mx + b. Students should already know how to find slope on a graph and intercepts.

I usually model for students how to do the first one or two equations. Then, students are allowed to work a couple with partners or on the board. Once everyone gets the hang of it, they work the last few on their own. At the end, we discuss any observations they have about the equations and the graphs. Hopefully students will notice the coefficient is the slope and that the constant is the y-intercept. This should lead into the discussion of quicker ways to graph (instead of creating a table of values every time).
